2020年東京オリンピック競技に空手が追加種目（型と組手）に選ばれました。
注目された組手ルールはフルコンタクトではなく寸止めとなりましたが、日本選手の健闘を期待したいと思います。
型は「世界空手連盟（WKF）」が定めた型を演武しますが、極真の型とは違った技の正確さ、スピード、バランス等見どころがあります。
【組手】
男子：-60kg、-67kg、-75kg、-84kg、+84kg
女子：-50kg、-55kg、-61kg、-68kg、+68kg
【型】
世界空手連盟（WKF）が定めた型の中から、全試合で異なる型を演武する。
